Five Ways to Wear a Cashmere Scarf
Share
A scarf is the cheapest way to change an outfit, and the size you own decides which of these you can actually do. Five ways we wear ours, from a tailored coat to a plain knit.
1. The single loop
Fold the scarf in half lengthways, drape it around your neck, and pass the loose ends through the loop. It sits close, stays put, and works with any coat collar. Best with a 180 × 30 cm classic scarf — long enough for one clean loop without bulk at the throat.
2. The drape
No knot, no fold: one end over each shoulder, falling in front. This is the version that reads most relaxed, and it suits a long coat or an open jacket. Choose a 190 × 35 cm stole or a 180 × 45–50 cm wide scarf so the ends hang past the hem line rather than stopping mid-chest.
3. The Parisian knot
Fold in half, wrap once around the neck, then pull both loose ends through the loop and tighten gently. Slightly more formal than the single loop, and the one that keeps a scarf tidy under a structured coat. A classic 180 × 30 cm does this best; anything wider becomes bulky at the knot.
4. Over the shoulders
Open the scarf out and wear it as a small wrap — over a dress in the evening, or over a knit indoors when the heating is unpredictable. This is where a 200 × 70 cm shawl earns its place: it covers the shoulders without needing a pin.
5. The full wrap
For very cold days: open the shawl, centre it on your back, and bring both ends forward over the shoulders, then belt at the waist if you want shape. An oversized 200 × 90 cm shawl does this without slipping; a 180 × 60 cm wrap works belted over a coat.
The rule of thumb: the narrower the scarf, the more knots it takes. The wider the wrap, the fewer.
Matching size to coat
- Tailored wool coat: 180 × 30 cm, single loop or Parisian knot — nothing that competes with the collar.
- Oversized coat or puffer: 190 × 35 cm, worn long and loose so the proportions balance.
- Blazer or knitwear: 180 × 45–50 cm, draped rather than knotted.
- Evening: 200 × 70 cm over the shoulders, in a solid or a quiet jacquard.
