A scarf is the rare gift that works for almost anyone, as long as you get two things right: the size, and whether it reads as a gift or as an afterthought. Here is how to choose one that gets worn rather than stored.

Why it works so often

It has no fit to get wrong, no size to guess, and it sits at a price that reads thoughtful rather than extravagant. It also solves the hardest gifting problem: the person who already has everything. A well-chosen scarf improves a coat they already own, which is a more useful gift than another object to find space for.

The safest choices

For someone whose style you know

Match the coat they actually wear. Camel, navy and charcoal cover most wardrobes; a check in those tones is the safest pattern. A classic 180 × 30 cm will work with any collar.

For someone whose style you don't know

Solid, mid-tone, no logo: oatmeal, stone, soft grey. A 180 × 45–50 cm wide scarf drapes well on almost everyone and photographs nicely if they post it.

For someone who feels the cold

Go bigger. An oversized 200 × 70 cm wrap can be worn over the shoulders indoors, which is where cold people actually are. This is also the size that feels most like a "real" gift when opened.
